OUGD301 Evaluation Design Practice 3

This module has been extremely challenging both time management wise and also handling unforeseen problems.  I had set myself the target of focusing on Dissertation every Sunday and over reading week, which I have achieved, however I believe this has been to the detriment of the Design Practice on this module.

At the stage where I should have had my eye on what four briefs I was going to focus on, I was desperately trying to get 500 leaflets screen printed for The Loft Space.  I have already discussed the  ramifications of this on this post http://l-whitaker1013-dp.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/the-loft-space-client-disappointment.html so I wont dwell on this here.

What I learnt from experience is:

  • Don't propose ambitious ideas which are not fully tested first . The Loft Space did not have a print budget so I thought a cheap solution to this was to screen print the leaflets. Although I had been reasonably successful at Screen printing before I had not tried anything like this before.
  • Don't offer to do something just to please your client.  I should have just offered to design the leaflets and let Janet source her own printing.  Her budget is not my problem.
  • Screen printing is best used for limited edition/special effects rather than high volume runs.
To get over the disappointment I felt after this experience I threw myself into the Circus and Typo briefs which was a positive way forward.  I did not however revisit my beautiful Excel Spreadsheet Project plan and revise it...EVER again throughout the module.  From a project management point of view this was not the best way forward as was to proved when I had five days to Module hand in and I had only just started the fourth brief, brief 2 What make a good App design.

My Time management, something which is normally a strength has been atrocious on this module.  As well as what happened with the Loft Space and the Dissertation, another reason for this was the three main briefs Circus, Typo and The Loft Space were very research and content heavy.  This was deliberate on my part as I love really getting under the skin of a subject before I start concept developing.  Going forward I need to find a better balance with my process so that I have time to make my Design outcomes are as strong as the initial ground work.

On a more positive note I have developed and honed a range of skills including:
  • Screen printing
  • A simple way to create 'Spot varnish' using foiling and a heat press.
  • Type and layout skills including my understanding of Typeface choices, combinations and best practises. For example I have a better grasp of what to do abut widows, hyphenation and hierarchy.
  • In design skills - Becoming more efficient and consistent with approach. Paragraph Styles, Booklet design and printing, General grid and layout skills, managing images for print and screen, formatting paragraphs i.e. managing hyphenation, using features such as slug area and attributes such as overprint.
  • Illustrator skills - more confident with vectoring and pen tool
  • Photoshop skills - Using Filters such as Vanishing Point to create perspective,  experimented with different layer styles and blending options such as colour burn and multiply, drop shadow and bevel and emboss,  Correct resizing of images between RGB and CMYK
  • Continuing to develop  Dreamweaver and Web design skills
  • To check and re-check work after each change.  Spell check, proof reads, check consistent use of Typeface - all so vital when trying to achieve a high standard of Type and Layout.
My crafting skills still leave something to be desired but that was due to not using College facilities such as Vernon Street due to Time constraints.
One area which I am aware I did not fully exploit on each brief was I did not push the range or consider methods of distribution as much as I should have done.  I was deliberately focused on developing certain aspects of each brief i.e. Type and Layout in Typo and Circus rather than expanding the potential of what each could bring.

Going forward to FMP I plan to be more outcome focused and have less content heavy briefs.
Although I did not use Digital as much as planned, I still have a real interest exploring how I can incorporate Design for Screen into my practice leading up to FMP.

Designer Branding for The Studio

As part of developing a studio presence for visiting professionals we were asked to pin up our cards and also a promotional piece:

From a getting noticed point of view Charlotte's The Romantics and also Kirsty Fruin had used fluorescent colours which stood out.

This was my offering.  When i designed it I was thinking more a mail shout than a wall piece,  Although when made into a pyramid its 3 D shape made it unique amongst the other work.  Also please with the bright purple.

Jamie's 'blue' poser stood out for its solid colours amongst he paler/white colours around it.

Fred also pointed out Sophie's Hello card worked as you good read it from quite a distance.  Matt C lolly poster worked as good use of white space.

PPD Task one

Things I know now:

1.  Branding is not just external facing/  Internal branding for training, employee engagement, Company vision and values.

2.  I can add value to a Branding Agency involved with Corporate/commercial businesses using my experience of Large/small business and the public sector.  I would be comfortable working/ add more value to a more Commercial facing Branding Agency.

3.  The client facing role in a design agency is a large role and a big responsibility.  Managing clients expectations, basically keeping them happy.  As a Freelancer you will not just be a designer  - ideas development, research, project manager, client manager, finance....

4. I am Branding/design focused however I would like to have a range of skills across print and digital media.

5.  The studios I worked in were not just specialist in Design they had marketing or advertising experts as well.

Things I would address differently

1.  The agency Space was quite a frustrating experience as I waited for them to get back to me after the initial meeting.  With hind sight I should have been more persistent and chased them up after the meeting.

2.  Contact more studios particularly digital based studios

3.

Things I will address at Level 6

1. Blog the Twitter contacts I have made, especially with digital focus

2.  Contact the ones I feel are appropriate for studio visits to discuss experience over level 6

3. Understand Trans media and where I can fit in

4.  Explore the developer/ designer relationship - Skills gaps and What my role can be

5. Explore creative/ business networks  within my local area to identify/create opportunities level 6 and beyond

Things we could address as a group

1.  Identify a Creative Network we can get involved in at level 6 as a group-  identify opportunities within that as a group.

2.  From a Freelance perspective -  how you get round the technical stuff?  EG Colour calibration of ac & printer,  Pantone swatches for clients, problems with software or Macs

3.  Again from a Freelance perspective- best practise for sourcing work, generating business

4.  Examples of real client presentations - how much do you give away when tendering for a job?

5.  Examples of quoting/invoicing for a brief  -  is it best to break the project down and charge for each level IE research and concept development, design development, resolution, printing etc.

6.  As an extension of this examples of appropriate contracts/terms and conditions - go to a solicitor or can we source online?

I was never 100% happy with the Two Strings branding however it gave me some collateral to use over the summer.  After discussing with several professionals I have decided to drop the Designer/Accountant angle.  It looks too much like I was to be both rather than just promoting the Accountancy skills I bring into design.  For now I have gone with a more 'creative' avatar I design for my twitter account and in the interests of being experimental I have avoided black and white.  I love colour especially purple so I am being true to myself.

I have added the new branding to my cargo account and also design a new business card and promotional leaflet.

This has been the design development over the summer.  The underlying principle has been about trying to be true to myself , what I like.  I started exploring Arts and Crafts/ Mackintosh style fonts.

I added this branding to Twitter and mywebsite over the summer however it just was not working.  the tiangle made the LW too smal.  So i went back to the drawing board.  Around this time I saw this work on the Multi-adaptor website which I liked:

I like how this Agency explains its services and the words they use.

In order to convey both my personal multi dimensional skills and also the fact I conside the multidimensional world in my design i started exploring triansgles, tetrahedryns and pyramids for my promotional material.

I also thoght the L I created could be interested folded at the diagonal.

I also rebranded my Cargo account over the summer

An my twitter account.

PPD group tutorial

An informative session with John and Andy.

A few tips:

Persistance can pay off

Personal indemnity insurance needed if you become freelance £400 approx.  To cover if project problem and Clients seek compensation.

Project planning -  track all amends have a separate file for each amend.  Keep track for charging client.

Estimate up not down.

Always get amends/instructions in writing or email

Get an order number

Printers
Can keep more control over a project if you manage the printer.  Agree printer adds a 10% commission for your involvement on estimates and invoices to the client.  Better practice to get client to pay the printer direct (your not left holding a large bill if client goes bust or there is a problem)

Check if there is still a print arbitration society. (PYRA?)

I have found these organisations which may be useful:

British Association for Print & Communication

For ethical information about paper and print

I eventually found this

I cant see on the face of it they offer arbitration services however US based and provide innovation and support to the industry.

Design Strategy presentation

Open publication - Free publishing - More presentation

My presentation skills left me over the summer.... I was so nervous again really cross with myself!

Developing a rationale

As a starting point for this I revisted the rationale workshop we did in April:

'Rationale workshops

Five things I want to do:
  • Use typography skills
  • Make a brochure/mag/book
  • Explore digital layout/typefaces for on line mags/e-Books
  • Research typography specialists such as The typographic Circle - Content & subjects
  • Research ISTD, events, competitions, members

Five things I need to do:
  • Deliver an outcome to this brief
  • Think how this can link to dissertation ideas/themes
  • Research layout, editorial
  • Identify content for publication
  • Identify distribution for publication
Five reasons why you need/want to do:
  • To expand on what has been covered in Type module
  • To explore/experiment in n area not touched so far
  • To improve my grid /layout skills
  • To be more informed /skilled as a designer
  • To expand my mind to other platforms/digital media possibilities and understand GD best practise
The above analysis represents a RATIONALE

These are ongoing/when hit a dead end, at evaluation, can be short or long term, use for prioritising.

5 things you Want to do + (why x 5) = rationale
                       Need

Five personal skills
  • Working with clients
  • Managing clients
  • Managing time within a live brief
Practical skills
  • Editorial skills
  • Grid/layout skills
  • Typeface selection appropriate for screen and print
  • Web layout design
  • Presentation/Boards layout
Processes to investigate
  • Book layout, pagination and book making
  • e-Book design and layout
  • Magazine/Book hierarchies - how/if defined

Products
  • Book/mag/brochure - a set/range
  • Design for screen /mobile/device
  • Poster/promotion
  • Branding for publication
Context

Typeface/typography context (Specialist) on print/digital platform (can they integrate)

What is missing - A problem to solve?
                                Content to deliver

These will be determined by the briefs, research and who the audience is.'

On the whole I still want/need to develop/achieve most of the skills/outcomes outlined back in April.

For clarity this is my revised rationale:

Five things I want to do this year:
  • Experiment - working in a real studio has made me realise that opportunities to push boundaries are limited.  Whilst I want my work to have a commercial focus I want to push the outcomes.
  • make full use of the facilities; I still haven't done any laser cutting or letterpress and did not do any screen printing in my second year
  • Endeavour to be more illustrative in concept developing
  • Develop my type and layout skills both practically in Indesign and also through researching best practices
  • Identify a collaborative brief opportunity
Five things I need to do
  • get stuck into my dissertation
  • deliver 6 to 10 briefs by 10 December 2012
  • identify an FMP to showcase my skills
  • have a timetabled plan;  With up to ten briefs on the boil it is going to be challenging to keep each one on target.
  • Get a placement with Elmwood this year
Five reasons why you need/want to do:
  • To squeeze every drop of potential learning and opportunity out of the College
  • To be the best skilled designer I have the potential to be
  • The dissertation research could lead to an interesting design outcome.
  • Industry professionals really respect good typography and I believe this can open doors.
  • I need to experience life in a large Branding Agency.  I loved being at 10 , being part of a design team.  I think I would thrive in a large studio

Summer weeks 8 to 11 at 10 Associates

I first met the Head of Design, Michael Freemantle, at 10 Associates in Mirfield at a meeting I arranged on 22nd June.  I emailed Michael with a link to my Cargo account and a PDF of my CV when we did the PPD exercise in May.  There was a link back to LCA as Michael studied on the BA Visual Comm. and Jane remembered him as a student.

The meeting was basically just for a cup of tea and a chat .  Ten has only recently moved into the Studio at Mirfield and its fabulous.  Everything felt right from the high ceilings, to the exposed brickwork and the huge Wall print in reception.

After an extremely informative chat with Michael and meeting the MD David Worthington I asked if it would be possible to come back for some experience in their studio.  Michael emailed me a few days later and said I could go in two or three days a week for three weeks -  This was fantastic news. (I think the cake I baked may have helped!)

Week one
Tuesday 7 August to Thursday 9 August

Felt part of the team almost straight away which was definitely helped by them being a friendly bunch of people and also a small team.

Research for two briefs.
1.  Recruitment Consultants which Ten had already re branded.  Potential Training/ Sales Academy and also employee engagement.  Research large corporations what so they do/say to employees.
Found a great website for researching large business practise which has several business cases of large companies: The Times 100 businesscasestudies

2.  Rewards schemes in general for a potential Reward Scheme for an Airport.

Both sets of research were followed up with Brainstorming sessions with other members of the team.  I really felt my opinions and ideas were taken on board.  Jill prepared a presentation to send to the client and I could really see how she had taken my ideas and used them in the proposals.

On the Thursday I was invited into a client meeting with the training manager which explored the ideas/research around the Sales Academy and employee engagement.

This work made me realise that my background has definitely a benefit in this industry especially as I have worked for both large and small businesses as well as the public sector.  I have a lot to bring to the table!

Week two and three
Tuesday 14 August to Thursday 23 August

1. Research and ideas for a new website for Will Lake who is a copywriter.  Michael recommended a standard browser format of 1024x768 and also consider how it would look on a smart phone.  As part of this also consider branding

Current homepage

Some Scamps

2. Research for inspiration for photographs suitable for Case studies.  This was for promotion of traditional crafts using real life case studies.

3. Research for mood/style  boards for presentation to client.  High end recruitment,  Exclusive gifts high end clients/affluent.  Attention to detail

4. Research for Folders for training collateral

5.  High resolution Images of Pret a mange style restaurants and stylish offices/reception for s specific presentation for a client to use.

6.  Research  for stock images suitable for Banners on an Intranet aimed at employee motivation.

7.  Design ideas for Banners

James and Michael also offered to give me some feedback on some of the briefs I was starting to write for the third year.  James had a great idea of using my dissertation research to produce a design outcome.
Michael offered to share a brief they were writing for Huddersfield University students for branding for a micro brewery.  Jill said she loves anything which demonstrates great typography skills.

David the MD also gave me some useful feedback about my branding and website.  He gets loads of portfolios and CVs emailed everyday so I really appreciated this.
He recommended I think carefully about how I position myself in the industry and what I actually want to do.  He did not think the Accountant/Designer pitch worked.  He said why do I need an Accountant I have already got one?  I said I was trying to promote the other skills I was already armed with.  He recommended I actually use this in how I promote myself ie strategic thinker, project manager etc.
He recommended I actually have an 'about' on the homepage so it is clear who I am, where I am based and what I have to offer. He also recommended I put the timelines of each project on as the perception in industry can be 'they had six months' to do that....he said it is more impressive if we only had two weeks.  I asked him if he would feedback again once I have re branded myself and my website.

This has been a fantastic opportunity to see how a design studio works and the 'real' client facing side of the business.  Seeing first hand the challenges presented day to day really brought home to me as a freelancer you really need lots more hats than just 'designer'.  The research and idea development has been really enjoyable.  I can see how beneficial it is to be part of a team where brainstorming ideas leads to stronger ideas.

Michael, Jill and David all said to keep in touch and I asked if they would provide feedback on projects over this year.
